Where did Sunscreen Come From?

Hello Dolls.

I get a lot of questions about my skin and how to have young skin over the age of 50. Obviously I can tell you to ice and steam and use a bunch of fabulous products. To wash your face everyday and to tone, and moisturize. But there is one product that you should use everyday no matter rain or shine, no matter if you are 7 or if you are 70. It protects your skin, reverses the signs of aging, and increases the overall health to your skin. This product is SUNSCREEN.

Now we all know that Sunscreen is essential for blocking against UVA and UVB Rays. They also now make sunscreen that blocks against blue light because of the popularity of technology. We know that it protects against early aging and skin cancer, and it is an essential to every day life, but do we know where it came from?

In early civilization plant seed oils and olive oils where used to protect against sun damage but the sunscreen boom didn’t happen until 1938. The first sunscreen ever was created by chemist Franz Greiter and it was called glacier creme. It has a whopping SPF of 2. One of the first popular sunscreen products was created for the United States Military in the 1940’s by Benjamin Green who was an airman and pharmacist. Green’s formula was red (Red Vet Pet) and similar consistency to petroleum jelly and was used to protect soldiers against harsh sun damage in World War Two. Later Green combined his Red Vet Pet, Cocoa Butter, and coconut oil which later became Coppertone’s Suntan Creme. All of these were the markers on how sunscreen is made today. The industry is alive and well and doing its best to prevent sun damage, skin cancer and early aging.

Now that summer is over you are probably thinking you don’t need to wear sunscreen right? Wrong. Sun is also very prominent in the winter and can reflect off of snow and cause terrible sunburns. It can also penetrate through clouds on overcast days so be sure to wear your sunscreen then as well.

SO what are my favorite sunscreens? EASY!

First is the Dermalogica Skin Recovery. This moisturizer has SPF 50. Antioxidant White Tea, rich in polyphenols, and a unique polypeptide help improve the appearance of photoaged skin.

Next we have the Rodan Fields Reverse SPF 50 Sunscreen. This face sunscreen protects skin and provides skin-brightening and anti-aging benefits. It ensures that the REVERSE Regimen has every opportunity to visibly decelerate early signs of skin aging that appear over time. It also helps protect from sun damage, which can lead to dullness and discoloration.

So be safe loves, and always remember wear sunscreen!
